Key Points for Installation of Geomembrane
The laying surface (subgrade surface) should meet the design requirements before laying all kinds of geotechnical materials: dry, compacted, flat & neat, no cracking, no obvious sharp protruding & depression, its flatness should be gently varied within the allowable range, the slope should be even and uniform. The Yin-Yang Angle of the subgrade surface should be smoothly transitional , its radius should not be less than 0.5 m.
Laying of Geomembrane:
1、Before laying the geomembrane, to ensure that the laying surface meets the design requirements and quality and
safety requirements
2、The specifications and quality of the geomembrane and welding rod should conform to the design
requirements and relevant standards
3、Personnel not involved in laying can’t be allowed to enter the Installation site
4、All the personnel entering the geomembrane Installation site should wear a pass and the shoes with no damage to the
geomembrane (no hard soles, no nails); smoking at site is not allowed.
5、All tools should be handled gently and carefully on the geotechnical materials, touching geomembrane with heat tools
is strictly prohibited
6、Don’t use any tool which may cause mechanical damage to the materials during its loading, unloading and handling,
pulling, lifting or rolling up of the materials should be carried out under control, uncontrolled spreading methods such
as "free fall " are not allowed.
7、The geomembrane should be protected well after its installation is completed.
8、All exposed geomembrane edges should immediately be pressed tightly with sandbags or other heavy objects to
prevent the geomembrane from being blown up by the wind or being pulled out of the surrounding anchor trench.
Welding Method of Geomembrane:
1、Double seam fusion welding:Applied to long straight seam welding of two HDPE geomembranes overlapping each
other to form the uniform permanent welding seam. Fusion welding is done by the heated wedges fixed to a
self-propelled welding machine, when the surfaces' temperature between two overlapping membranes are heated to
be above the melting point of polyethylene, they are welded together by pre-set pressure wheels. The fusion welding
machine is equipped with a device that can continuously adjust the heating temperature.
2、Extrusion welding: Applied to the weldings of straight and non-straight seams, such as repairing damage for the
surrounding of cylinder, the through hole of the pipe, the multi-layer overlapping at corner(yin-yang angle) and the
other positions where the fusion welding machine doesn’t work. The welding material (welding rod) used for
extrusion welding machine should be made of resin with the same composition as HDPE geomembrane. Extrusion
welding is to insert melted resin welding rods into the overlapping joint between two layers of geomembranes to
be welded, the preheated air and the additional melting polymers cause the materials of each surface to melt,and
the melted welding rod and the welding surfaces are bonded evenly. Extrusion welding machine is equipped with
the indicator which can display and set the temperature and preheating unit number.
3、Hot air welding: Applied to spot welding between HDPE geomembranes before extrusion welding to prevent upper or
lower two layers or three layers of geomembranes from dislocation during extrusion welding.
Attentions to Geomembrane Welding:
1. Climatic conditions for welding: (1). Atmospheric temperature 5-40℃;(2). Dry conditions, especially no precipitation or
other excessive moisture such as fog or dew;(3). Wind speed not more than grade 4
2. Check for litter, water, dust, and any debris in the welding seaming area. The overlapping of geomembranes in width
should be at least 10cm for fusion welding and 7.5cm for extrusion welding.
3. The Welding operator should regularly check the operating temperature and speed of the equipments
4. The Welding seam should extend to the outer edge of the anchor trench, use extrusion welding at the intersection for
all the transverse seams. The top flat geomembrane in the extrusion welding area should be cut off and the welding
area should be almost divided equally with the seam prior to welding.
5. The welding rod should be kept clean and dry.
